Railcar tour around Etna
Circumetnea is a narrow railroad track operating since 1859 that goes around Etna, among lava trenches and citric fruit trees, unravelling all its most peculiar secrets.
It is a fascinating way to discover the imposing scenery of Etna and to explore the towns that for centuries have been perched on the slopes of the great volcano. You journey can start from one of the two train terminals: the Catania Borgo station, set on the high area of via Etna; or else the Giarre station, near the Trenitalia station, that is found on the main Messina-Catania line.
This is the most convenient solution for travelers coming from or going to Taormina. The train goes up the slopes of the Etna through a landscape of citrus fruit, olive and prickly pear plantations that alternates with rugged terrain where the tracks go through quite old lava pour.
The transport service is from Monday to Saturday. On Sundays you have the option of taking a tour organized by the Etna Wine Route Association.
A trip aboard an old 1937 railcar will get you to visit some wineries where you will savor Etna wines and typical products.
Take off and arrival at Riposto.
